Blended CAC: The Formula, When to Trust It, and How ChatGPT Spend Fits In

Platform CPAs do not agree with each other or with your real costs. Blended CAC shows what a new customer actually costs across all channels. Here is how to calculate it.

Every ad platform reports its own cost per acquisition. Meta says one thing, Google says another, and ChatGPT ads say something else. None of them match your actual margin when you add up the spend and count the new customers. That gap is why blended CAC exists.

Blended CAC is the total cost to acquire a new customer across all channels combined. It does not rely on any platform's attribution. It uses your own spend and your own customer records. When you add a new channel like ChatGPT ads, blended CAC is how you measure whether the combination is more efficient than before.

The blended CAC formula

Blended CAC = Total marketing spend / Number of new customers acquired

If you spent $40,000 on marketing last month across all channels and acquired 800 first-time customers (not repeat buyers), your blended CAC is $50.

The formula is simple. The inputs require care.

What goes in the numerator

At minimum, include all paid media spend: Meta, Google, TikTok, ChatGPT, Pinterest, affiliate commissions, influencer fees. For a "fully loaded" blended CAC, add:

  • Creative production costs
  • Agency fees
  • Marketing software (attribution tools, landing page builders, email platforms used for acquisition)
  • Marketing salaries allocated to acquisition

Most brands track both a paid-only blended CAC (for channel mix decisions) and a fully loaded blended CAC (for business planning).

What goes in the denominator

Only genuinely first-time buyers. Match orders to your customer database by email and exclude anyone who has purchased before. If you count repeat purchases, your CAC will look artificially low and you will not know what new customers actually cost.

Blended CAC vs platform CPA

Platform CPA (cost per acquisition) is what Meta, Google or ChatGPT reports in its dashboard. Blended CAC is what you calculate from your own data. They differ for several reasons:

Why they differWhat happens
Attribution overlapMultiple platforms claim the same conversion, inflating each platform's reported volume and deflating its CPA
Attribution windows differMeta's 7-day click differs from Google's 30-day click, making CPAs hard to compare
View-through attributionPlatforms count people who saw an ad but converted later through another channel
Missing channelsOrganic, email and direct traffic contribute conversions that no paid platform claims
Repeat vs newPlatforms often count all conversions, not just first-time customers

A simple test: add up the conversions each platform claims. If the total exceeds your actual new customer count by 30% or more, you have significant overlap.

Blended CAC sidesteps all of this by starting from spend totals and real customer counts. It answers: "What did we spend, and how many new customers did we get?"

When to trust blended CAC

Blended CAC is most useful when:

  • You need a single source of truth. Boardrooms and investors want one number, not a spreadsheet of conflicting platform metrics.
  • You are comparing time periods. "Our blended CAC this quarter is lower than last quarter" is a clear, apples-to-apples comparison.
  • You are evaluating a new channel. Adding ChatGPT ads to an existing Meta program should improve or maintain blended CAC if the combination is working.
  • You are allocating budget. If Meta's reported CPA is $35 and Google's is $45, but your blended CAC is $55, something is off. Blended CAC grounds the conversation.

Blended CAC does not tell you which channel is driving results. It tells you how the whole system is performing. For channel-level insights, you need incrementality testing or careful attribution modeling. Our guide to attribution for AI channels covers how to measure a new channel's true contribution.

How ChatGPT spend fits into blended CAC

ChatGPT ads are a new channel for most brands. Adding them to the mix affects blended CAC in predictable ways.

If ChatGPT adds incremental customers

The ideal case: ChatGPT reaches people you would not have acquired otherwise. Total spend goes up, but new customer count goes up proportionally or more. Blended CAC stays flat or improves.

Hypothetical example:

ScenarioTotal spendNew customersBlended CAC
Meta only$30,000600$50.00
Meta + ChatGPT$35,000720$48.61

ChatGPT added $5,000 of spend and 120 new customers. The incremental CAC on ChatGPT is $5,000 / 120 = $41.67, which is better than the blended average. Overall blended CAC improved.

If ChatGPT overlaps with existing channels

If ChatGPT reaches people who would have bought anyway through Meta or Google, you pay twice for the same customer. Spend goes up but new customers do not rise proportionally. Blended CAC gets worse.

ScenarioTotal spendNew customersBlended CAC
Meta only$30,000600$50.00
Meta + ChatGPT (overlap)$35,000640$54.69

ChatGPT added $5,000 but only 40 incremental customers. Incremental CAC is $125, well above the blended average. This is a warning sign.

How to tell which is happening

Run a controlled test. Hold Meta spend constant, add ChatGPT at a fixed budget for several weeks, and compare total new customers to the previous period. If new customers rise by more than random variation, ChatGPT is adding incrementally. If they stay flat, you have overlap.

This is simpler than multi-touch attribution but requires patience and stable baseline conditions. Our guide to incrementality testing for paid ads explains the method.

Sample blended CAC calculations

All numbers below are hypothetical and for illustration only.

Scenario 1: Three-channel mix before ChatGPT

ChannelSpendPlatform-reported conversionsPlatform CPA
Meta$25,000550$45.45
Google$10,000250$40.00
Affiliate$5,00080$62.50
Total$40,000880

Platform totals: 880 conversions. Actual new customers from your database: 720. The overlap is 160 conversions that multiple platforms claimed.

Blended CAC: $40,000 / 720 = $55.56.

Scenario 2: Adding ChatGPT to the mix

Same baseline. Add $5,000 of ChatGPT spend.

ChannelSpend
Meta$25,000
Google$10,000
Affiliate$5,000
ChatGPT$5,000
Total$45,000

Actual new customers this period: 810. Blended CAC: $45,000 / 810 = $55.56.

Blended CAC stayed flat, meaning ChatGPT added customers at the same efficiency as the existing mix. The 90 incremental customers cost $5,000, so ChatGPT's incremental CAC is $55.56, matching the blend. This is a neutral result, neither good nor bad.

Scenario 3: ChatGPT improves the blend

Same baseline. ChatGPT adds $5,000 spend, new customers rise to 850.

Blended CAC: $45,000 / 850 = $52.94.

ChatGPT added 130 incremental customers at $38.46 each, pulling the blended average down. This is the goal.

Scenario 4: ChatGPT worsens the blend

Same baseline. ChatGPT adds $5,000 spend, new customers rise to only 740.

Blended CAC: $45,000 / 740 = $60.81.

ChatGPT added only 20 incremental customers at $250 each. Either the channel is inefficient for this brand, or significant overlap exists with other channels. Time to reduce ChatGPT spend or fix targeting.

Blended CAC and MER

MER (marketing efficiency ratio) is another blended metric. The formula:

MER = Total revenue / Total marketing spend

If you made $200,000 in revenue on $40,000 of spend, your MER is 5.0.

MER and blended CAC measure the same system from different angles:

MetricWhat it measuresWhen to use
Blended CACCost to acquire a new customerCustomer acquisition efficiency, payback analysis
MERRevenue generated per dollar of spendOverall marketing efficiency, budget allocation

Both are blended. Neither relies on platform attribution. Used together, they give a complete picture. Our MER guide and MER calculator cover the metric in depth.

Setting a blended CAC target

A good blended CAC is one below what a new customer is worth to you. The calculation depends on your margins and payback window.

First-order payback: If your average first order is $75 with 50% gross margin, first-order contribution is $37.50. To pay back on the first order, blended CAC must be below $37.50.

12-month payback: If the average customer buys 2.2 times in the first year with average contribution of $35 per order, first-year contribution is $77. To pay back within 12 months, blended CAC must be below $77.

Target with profit margin: If you want 25% of first-year contribution as profit margin, your blended CAC target is $77 x 0.75 = $57.75.

Our CAC calculator and ecommerce customer acquisition cost guide cover this in more detail.

Tracking blended CAC over time

Blended CAC should be reviewed at least monthly. Build a simple tracking table:

MonthTotal spendNew customersBlended CACMER
July$38,000680$55.884.8
August$42,000790$53.165.0
September$45,000810$55.564.9
October$48,000920$52.175.2

(Hypothetical data for illustration)

Watch for trends. A rising blended CAC while MER holds steady may mean you are spending more to acquire each customer but getting higher-value customers. A rising blended CAC with falling MER is a warning.

How SecondWin helps with efficient acquisition

SecondWin adds ChatGPT as a second channel for brands that run Meta, with the goal of improving or maintaining blended CAC. We study the longest-running ads in your niche in Meta's Ad Library to find the promise, proof and offer that keep working, then write original ChatGPT ads around the questions your buyers ask. Campaigns run in your own OpenAI ad account, so you can measure blended CAC before and after with your own data.

FAQ

What is the difference between blended CAC and platform CPA?

Platform CPA is what each ad platform reports based on its own attribution. Blended CAC is what you calculate from total spend across all channels divided by actual first-time customers from your own records. Platforms often claim overlapping conversions and use different attribution windows, so their CPAs do not add up to reality. Blended CAC does.

How do I know if a new channel like ChatGPT is improving my blended CAC?

Run a controlled test. Hold other channel spend constant, add the new channel at a fixed budget for several weeks, and compare total new customers to the previous period. If new customers rise proportionally more than spend, blended CAC improves. If spend rises faster than customers, the new channel is hurting efficiency or duplicating existing conversions.

Should I trust platform-reported CPA or blended CAC?

Use both for different purposes. Platform CPA helps optimize within each channel: which campaigns, audiences and creatives perform best. Blended CAC tells you whether the whole system is efficient. When platforms disagree or their totals exceed your actual customer count, blended CAC is the tiebreaker.

What is a good blended CAC for ecommerce?

A good blended CAC is below what a new customer is worth to you after margins. If first-year contribution per customer is $80 and you want to recover acquisition cost within 12 months with some profit margin, blended CAC should be well below $80. Industry benchmarks vary too much by product and category to be useful targets.

How often should I calculate blended CAC?

At least monthly. Weekly is useful during heavy spend periods or when testing new channels. Track it alongside MER and plot both over time to see whether efficiency is improving or declining as you scale.
