How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost? CPC, CPM and Budgets in 2026
Reported ChatGPT ads CPCs, CPMs and minimum budgets for 2026, plus worked examples that show what a realistic test costs and how to tell whether the numbers work for you.
The short answer: as of mid-2026, ChatGPT ads have no minimum total spend, a minimum daily budget of about $25 per campaign in the US, recommended starting bids that work out to roughly $3 to $5 per click, and third-party-reported CPMs in roughly the $25 to $45 range.
The useful answer is longer. What ChatGPT ads cost you depends on your bid type, your niche, your landing page and what a customer is worth to you. This guide covers the published and reported numbers, then shows how to turn them into a budget you can defend.
The minimums
When ChatGPT ads launched in February 2026, access was reportedly limited to large advertisers with commitments around $200,000. That ended when OpenAI opened self-serve Ads Manager in beta on May 5, 2026.
Today, as of mid-2026:
- Minimum total spend: none.
- Minimum daily budget: about $25 per campaign in the US. It varies by market.
- Platform fee: none. Ads Manager is free to use; you pay for media.
So the cheapest possible campaign is about $25 a day, or roughly $750 a month. In practice, that floor is usually too low to learn much, as the math below shows.
Bid types and what they cost
OpenAI currently offers three ways to pay.
| Bid type | You pay for | Reported cost range | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPM | 1,000 impressions | Roughly $25 to $45 (third-party observations) | Awareness, reach |
| CPC | Each click | Roughly $3 to $5 (OpenAI's recommended starting bids) | Most first campaigns |
| oCPC | Clicks, with bids optimized toward conversions | Varies; beta for product-feed campaigns since August 2026 | Catalog brands with good conversion data |
CPM was the original model. CPC arrived with self-serve, and in June 2026 Ads Manager added the ability to convert existing CPM campaigns to CPC. oCPC is the newest and is limited to product-feed campaigns in beta.

How these compare with other channels
A ChatGPT CPM of $25 to $45 looks expensive next to commonly cited Meta CPM ranges of roughly $8 to $20, depending on niche and season. But comparing CPMs across channels is misleading.
On ChatGPT, your ad shows directly below an answer to a question someone just asked in detail. On a social feed, it appears between posts from friends. The question is not what an impression costs. It is what a customer costs.
Early third-party data hints that ChatGPT traffic may be worth more per click. Criteo reported in February 2026 that ChatGPT traffic converted about 1.5 times better than other channels. Similarweb reported an average CTR around 0.68%, with top brands near 1.57%. Neither number guarantees anything for your account, but both suggest you should judge on cost per acquisition, not cost per impression. For a full channel comparison, read ChatGPT ads vs Meta ads.
Converting CPM to effective CPC
If you run CPM, you can estimate an effective cost per click from your CTR:
Effective CPC = CPM / (CTR x 1,000)At a $35 CPM and a 0.68% CTR: 35 / (0.0068 x 1,000) = 35 / 6.8 = about $5.15 per click.
At the same CPM and a 1.57% CTR: 35 / 15.7 = about $2.23 per click.
That gap is why creative quality matters so much on CPM. Better cards with sharper context hints can cut your effective click cost by more than half. The CPM calculator and CPC calculator do this math for you.
Worked example: a realistic first test
Say you sell a $60 skincare kit with a 65% gross margin. Your gross profit per first order is $39.
You run CPC at an average of $4 per click with $75 a day for 21 days.
- Total spend: $75 x 21 = $1,575
- Clicks: $1,575 / $4 = about 394
- Conversion rate on the landing page: 3%
- Orders: 394 x 0.03 = about 12
- Cost per acquisition (CPA): $1,575 / 12 = about $131
- Revenue: 12 x $60 = $720
- ROAS on first purchase: $720 / $1,575 = about 0.46
On first purchase alone, this loses money. Your break-even CPA is your $39 gross profit, and you are paying about $131.
Now change one input at a time:
- Raise conversion rate to 5%: about 20 orders, CPA about $79.
- Raise AOV to $120 with a bundle: same 12 orders, revenue $1,440, ROAS about 0.91.
- Factor in repeat purchases: if the average customer buys three times in a year, lifetime gross profit is about $117, closer to a $131 CPA.
The lesson: at $3 to $5 per click, ChatGPT ads work best for products with healthy margins, higher order values, repeat purchase or strong landing pages. Find your own threshold with the break-even ROAS calculator before you launch.
How much data does a budget buy?
A test only helps if it produces enough conversions to read. A rough rule: you want at least 20 to 30 conversions per ad group before trusting a cost-per-acquisition number.
| Daily budget | Avg CPC | Clicks per week | Conversions per week at 3% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $4 | about 44 | about 1.3 |
| $50 | $4 | about 88 | about 2.6 |
| $100 | $4 | 175 | about 5.3 |
| $200 | $4 | 350 | about 10.5 |
At the $25 minimum, reaching 20 conversions takes about 15 weeks. At $100 a day it takes about four. That is why a starting range of $50 to $200 a day per campaign is the usual recommendation. Plan your own with the ChatGPT ads budget calculator.
What drives your ChatGPT ads cost up or down
Factors that tend to raise costs:
- Competitive niches: more advertisers chasing the same conversations push bids up.
- Vague context hints: broad hints match weaker conversations, so fewer people click.
- Weak cards: low CTR on CPM means a higher effective CPC.
- Mismatched landing pages: poor conversion rate raises CPA even when clicks are cheap.
Factors that tend to lower them:
- Specific situational hints that match high-intent conversations
- Cards that answer the question directly with a clear promise and a concrete offer
- Strong message match between ad and landing page
- Clean conversion tracking with the pixel and Conversions API, which bidding needs to optimize
The other costs: management
Media is not the only line item. Someone has to write cards, write hints, check policy, read reports and refresh creative. Your options:
- Do it yourself: free tooling, but it costs your time.
- Software tools: monthly subscriptions, and you still operate them.
- Agencies: traditional agencies typically charge a monthly retainer, often $2,000 to $10,000 or more, and/or a percentage of spend, plus setup fees.
- Done-for-you services with flat pricing.

FAQ
What is the minimum spend for ChatGPT ads?
As of mid-2026 there is no minimum total spend. The minimum daily budget is about $25 per campaign in the US, which varies by market. Before self-serve Ads Manager opened on May 5, 2026, access reportedly required commitments around $200,000. Most advertisers will want more than the daily minimum so they can gather enough conversions to make decisions within a few weeks.
What is the average CPC for ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI's recommended starting bids work out to roughly $3 to $5 per click as of mid-2026. Your actual cost depends on your niche, competition, context hints and creative. On CPM campaigns, your effective CPC depends on CTR: at a $35 CPM, a 0.68% CTR works out to about $5.15 per click, while a 1.57% CTR is about $2.23.
Are ChatGPT ads more expensive than Facebook ads?
Per impression, usually yes. Reported ChatGPT CPMs of roughly $25 to $45 are higher than commonly cited Meta ranges of about $8 to $20. But impressions are not equal. ChatGPT ads appear right after a detailed question, and Criteo reported ChatGPT traffic converting about 1.5 times better than other channels. Compare channels on cost per acquisition and profit, not CPM.
How much should I budget for a first ChatGPT ads test?
A practical range is $50 to $200 a day per campaign for three to four weeks. At $4 per click and a 3% conversion rate, $100 a day produces about five conversions a week, enough to see direction within a month. The $25 daily minimum works, but it can take months to collect enough conversions to make confident decisions.
