ChatGPT Ads for Local and Service Businesses

Plumbers, dentists, salons and tutors get asked about on ChatGPT every day. Here is how local businesses can show up with ads that turn questions into booked jobs.

"My water heater is leaking from the bottom, is that an emergency?" "How much should a deep cleaning cost for a 3-bedroom house?" "What should I look for in a dog groomer for an anxious dog?" People ask ChatGPT these questions every day, and many of them end with the person hiring someone local.

For service businesses, that makes ChatGPT ads interesting. Your ad can appear right after ChatGPT has explained the problem, when the person is deciding who to call. This guide covers how local and service businesses can run ChatGPT ads profitably, and where the channel still has limits.

How local targeting works on ChatGPT

ChatGPT ads do not use keyword lists or tight radius targeting the way local search ads do. Targeting relies on context hints: plain-language descriptions of the conversations your ad fits. ChatGPT may also use what it remembers across a person's chats to judge relevance.

Location is set at the campaign level by market. As of mid-2026, ads run in the US and a growing list of countries, but fine-grained local controls are still developing, so check the current options in Ads Manager when you set up. In practice, local businesses should:

  • Put the service area in the context hints ("homeowner in the Denver area with a leaking water heater").
  • Name the city or area on the card itself, so people outside it skip the click.
  • Use a landing page that names the service area clearly.

Naming the city in your copy is your best filter against paying for out-of-area clicks. Someone in Boston will not click "Same-Day Plumbing in Austin".

Which service businesses fit

The best fits share three traits: customers research before booking, the job is worth enough to absorb a $3 to $5 click, and the customer is a consumer who likely uses free ChatGPT.

Business typeTypical question that leads to a bookingFit
Home services (plumbing, HVAC, roofing)"Is this leak urgent?", "Repair or replace?"Strong: high job values
Cleaning services"How much does a move-out clean cost?"Good
Pet services (grooming, training, boarding)"How do I find a groomer for an anxious dog?"Good
Tutoring and lessons"How can my kid catch up in algebra?"Good, but products for minors are restricted
Salons and spas"What haircut suits a round face?"Moderate: lower ticket
Dental and medical clinics"Are veneers worth it?"Restricted: health claims need care
Legal and financial services"Do I need a lawyer for a small claims case?"Restricted: check policy carefully

Lead math for service businesses

Most service businesses measure leads (calls, form fills, bookings), not purchases. Here is how to work out what you can afford.

Say you run a house cleaning company:

  • Average first booking: $220
  • Gross profit per job: 40%, so $88
  • 30% of new customers book again within a year, at an average of 4 more cleans
  • Expected first-year gross profit per customer: $88 + (0.30 × 4 × $88) = $88 + $105.60 = $193.60
  • Lead to booked job rate: 35%

If you are willing to spend up to half of first-year gross profit to acquire a customer, that is $96.80. Your maximum cost per lead is $96.80 × 0.35 = $33.88.

At a $4 CPC, you need roughly $4 / $33.88 = 11.8% of clicks to turn into leads. That is achievable for a focused landing page with a simple quote form, but only if the page is built for it. The conversion rate calculator and CAC calculator help you test your own numbers.

Example chat cards for local businesses

A chat card has a headline of up to 50 characters, a body up to about 100, an image and a link. Every claim must be true and shown on the landing page.

Plumber

  • Headline: Water Heater Repair in Denver, Same Day
  • Body: Licensed plumbers with upfront pricing before work starts. Book online or call 7am to 9pm.

House cleaner

  • Headline: Move-Out Cleaning in Austin From $189
  • Body: Insured cleaners with a checklist built for deposit returns. Book a time online in 2 minutes.

Dog groomer

  • Headline: Calm, Low-Stress Dog Grooming in Portland
  • Body: One dog at a time, no cages, and breaks when your dog needs them. Book a first visit online.

What these avoid: "best plumber in Denver" (unproven), "guaranteed deposit back" (an outcome you cannot guarantee), and any hint that the ad knows the person's situation ("Saw your water heater is leaking?"), which OpenAI's policy prohibits. Fake urgency like "Only 2 slots left today!" is also out unless it is literally true and shown on the page.

Draft variations with the ChatGPT ad generator, then run them through the ChatGPT ad policy checker.

Context hints for local services

Write hints as situations, with location and intent:

  • "Homeowner in the Denver area whose water heater is leaking and wants to know if it needs urgent repair"
  • "Renter in Austin moving out soon who wants a professional clean to help get their deposit back"
  • "Dog owner in Portland looking for a groomer who is gentle with nervous or anxious dogs"

Compare that to "plumber Denver, water heater repair", which reads like a search keyword and tells ChatGPT nothing about the moment. The free context hints generator produces drafts in this format, and our context hints guide explains the logic.

Landing pages that book jobs

Service businesses often send ads to a homepage with a slideshow and a menu of 14 services. For ChatGPT traffic, build one page per service you advertise (our guide to landing pages that convert ChatGPT ad traffic covers the general principles):

  • Headline repeating the card's promise and service area.
  • Price or price range, if you can share it. ChatGPT users often just asked "how much does this cost?"
  • Proof: licence numbers, insurance, real review count and rating, photos of your team.
  • One action: a booking widget, short quote form or click-to-call button.
  • The areas you serve, listed plainly.

Track the action. Fire a lead event with the OpenAI pixel on form submit or booking confirmation, and use a call-tracking number on the page so phone leads count too.

Budgets for local campaigns

Local markets are smaller than national ones, so you may not be able to spend a large budget efficiently. The OpenAI minimum is about $25 a day per campaign in the US. We generally recommend $50 to $200 a day to start, but a local service business in one city may sit at the lower end.

At $40 a day and $4 per click, you get about 10 clicks a day, or 70 a week. At a 12% lead rate, that is around 8 leads a week. That is enough to judge lead quality within two to three weeks. The ad budget calculator works backward from the number of jobs you want.

What to watch out for

  • Restricted categories: health, dental, legal and financial services face extra review. Avoid outcome promises and keep claims factual.
  • Service area drift: if clicks come from outside your area, tighten the location in copy and hints.
  • Lead quality: count booked jobs, not just form fills. Ask each lead how they found you.
  • Seasonality: HVAC, landscaping and pest control swing hard by season. Budget accordingly.

FAQ

Can I target a specific city with ChatGPT ads?

You choose markets at the campaign level, and local controls have been evolving through 2026, so check what Ads Manager currently offers. Either way, put your service area in your context hints, name the city in your headline or body, and state it on the landing page. That keeps out-of-area clicks low even when geographic targeting is broad.

Are ChatGPT ads better than Google local ads for service businesses?

They work differently. Google search catches people typing "plumber near me" when they are ready to call. ChatGPT ads reach people earlier, while they are understanding the problem and deciding what to do. Many local businesses will keep search as their core channel and test ChatGPT as an additional source of leads.

Can dentists, lawyers or clinics run ChatGPT ads?

Health and financial services are restricted categories rather than banned outright, so some can run, subject to extra review. Avoid outcome promises, before and after images and anything that plays on fear or insecurity. Keep claims factual, verifiable and matched on the landing page, and review OpenAI's current policies for your profession before launching.

How do I track phone calls from ChatGPT ads?

Use a dedicated call-tracking number on the landing page your ads link to, so calls from that page are attributable. Fire an OpenAI pixel event when someone taps the call button, and ask new customers how they found you as a cross-check. Count booked jobs, not only calls, when you judge results.
