ChatGPT Ads Benchmarks 2026: CTR, CPC, CPM and Conversion Rates

The public ChatGPT ads benchmarks, what each number really means, and how to turn them into targets that fit your own margins.

ChatGPT ads are new enough that there is no deep, independent benchmark dataset yet. What exists is a handful of reported figures from OpenAI's own guidance and from third parties like Similarweb and Criteo. They are useful, as long as you know where each number comes from and what it can and cannot tell you.

This article collects the benchmarks that have been publicly reported as of 2026, explains how to read them, and shows how to build your own targets from your margins instead of borrowing someone else's averages.

The reported numbers at a glance

MetricReported figureSource and caveat
Click-through rate (CTR)About 0.68% average, top brands near 1.57%Similarweb; an observed average across advertisers, not a guarantee
Cost per click (CPC)Roughly $3–5Based on OpenAI's recommended starting bids; actual CPCs vary
Cost per thousand impressions (CPM)Roughly $25–45Third-party observations; varies by market and category
Conversion performanceChatGPT traffic converting about 1.5x better than other channelsCriteo, February 2026; compares referral traffic, not ad-specific
Minimum daily budgetAbout $25 per campaign (US)OpenAI Ads Manager; varies by market
Weekly usersAbout 900 millionWidely reported figure for ChatGPT overall, not the ad-eligible audience

Treat every one of these as a starting reference. The ranges are wide because the channel is young, categories differ, and the auction has been changing quickly as more advertisers arrive after self-serve opened in May 2026.

Click-through rate: what 0.68% means

Similarweb reported an average CTR of around 0.68% for ChatGPT ads, with top brands near 1.57%. For context, around 1% is a commonly cited figure for Meta feed ads, so ChatGPT's average sits a bit lower and its top performers sit higher.

That spread is the interesting part. A chat card appears below ChatGPT's answer, clearly labeled as sponsored. When it directly answers what the person was just asking about, it gets clicked. When it is loosely related, it gets ignored. The gap between 0.68% and 1.57% is mostly the gap between ads that fit the conversation and ads that do not.

What moves CTR:

  • Context hints that describe a real situation, not a keyword. "Parent looking for a quick weeknight dinner their kids will eat" beats "dinner recipes."
  • A headline that reads like the next step in the conversation. See how to write ChatGPT ad headlines.
  • A specific, provable claim in the body (within the roughly 100-character limit) instead of generic praise.
  • An image that shows the product in use, which is easy to read at chat-card size.

Use the CTR calculator to track your own rate per ad rather than per campaign, because averages hide your winners.

CPC and CPM: two views of the same cost

OpenAI's recommended starting bids work out to roughly $3–5 per click. Reported CPMs are roughly $25–45. These two figures are linked through CTR:

Effective CPC = CPM / (CTR x 1,000)

At a $35 CPM and the 0.68% average CTR, effective CPC is $35 / 6.8, about $5.15. At the 1.57% top-brand CTR, it is $35 / 15.7, about $2.23. That is why "what does a ChatGPT click cost" has no single answer. Your creative quality is a large part of your price.

Compare that to commonly cited Meta CPMs in the ~$8–20 range. ChatGPT impressions cost more per thousand. The argument for paying more is intent: people see the ad while actively researching, often close to a decision. Whether that premium is worth it depends on your conversion rate, which is the next number.

Conversion rate: the benchmark that matters most

Criteo reported in February 2026 that traffic arriving from ChatGPT converted about 1.5x better than traffic from other channels. Two cautions:

  • That figure describes referral traffic from ChatGPT broadly, including organic links, not only paid chat cards.
  • "Better than other channels" is relative to each retailer's own mix. If your site converts at 2% overall, 1.5x suggests around 3%, not a universal number.

There is no reliable public benchmark yet for ChatGPT ads conversion rate by industry. Anyone quoting a precise figure for your niche is guessing. The honest approach is to start from your existing site conversion rate and treat the Criteo finding as a reason for cautious optimism, then measure.

Build your own targets instead

Benchmarks tell you whether you are in a normal range. Targets tell you whether you are making money. Here is how to set targets from your own numbers.

Step 1: Calculate break-even CPA

Break-even cost per acquisition is what you can spend to get one customer without losing money on the first order.

Break-even CPA = AOV x gross margin

Say you sell an $85 average order with a 60% gross margin. Break-even CPA = $85 x 0.60 = $51.

Step 2: Work back to the CPC you can afford

Max CPC = Break-even CPA x conversion rate

If you expect 3% of clicks to buy, max CPC = $51 x 0.03 = $1.53. If you can lift conversion to 5% with a sharper landing page, max CPC = $51 x 0.05 = $2.55.

Both are below the $3–5 range. That does not mean the channel cannot work for you, but it does mean first-order profit is unlikely unless you raise order value or conversion rate, or you have strong repeat purchase economics. Plug your own figures into the break-even ROAS calculator.

Step 3: Set the CTR you need

If you buy on CPM, work out the CTR that makes your effective CPC hit your target:

Required CTR = CPM / (Max CPC x 1,000)

At a $35 CPM and a $2.55 max CPC, required CTR = 35 / 2,550, about 1.37%. That is above the reported average and below the top-brand figure. You now know exactly what bar your creative has to clear.

A benchmark scorecard you can use

After two to three weeks with enough clicks per ad, score each ad against this simple table. The thresholds are illustrative and should be adjusted to your margins.

When CTR is healthy but conversion rate is poor, the ad is promising something the landing page does not deliver. Our guide to landing pages that convert ChatGPT ad traffic covers the fix.

Why benchmarks will keep moving

Several things are shifting the numbers through 2026:

  • More advertisers. Self-serve removed the reported ~$200K minimum commitment, so more brands are bidding.
  • New bid types. CPC arrived in May and oCPC in beta for product feeds in August, which changes how costs are distributed.
  • International expansion. ChatGPT ads have been reported live in 40 or more countries by late 2026. Costs in newer markets may differ significantly from the US.
  • Better measurement. Automatic advanced matching and the Conversions API mean more conversions get attributed, which can make reported conversion rates rise without any real change in buyer behavior.

Revisit benchmarks quarterly, and always weigh them below your own data once you have it.

How SecondWin uses benchmarks

SecondWin does not publish customer results, so we will not quote you a number for what your campaign will do. What we do is set targets from your own margin and price point, write ads designed to earn above-average CTR by answering specific buyer questions, and report against those targets in your monthly, biweekly or weekly refresh depending on your plan.

The fastest way to see whether your niche looks promising is to run the free URL analysis on your site. It shows the proven messages in your niche and draft ChatGPT ads before you spend anything.

FAQ

What is a good CTR for ChatGPT ads?

Similarweb reported an average CTR of around 0.68% for ChatGPT ads, with top brands near 1.57%. Anything consistently above 1% is a strong result for most advertisers. More important than the benchmark is the CTR you need to hit your target cost per click, which you can calculate from your CPM and your maximum affordable CPC.

How much does a click cost on ChatGPT ads?

OpenAI's recommended starting bids work out to roughly $3–5 per click as of mid-2026. On CPM campaigns, your effective cost per click depends on CTR: at a $35 CPM and a 0.68% CTR, each click costs about $5.15, while at a 1.57% CTR it costs about $2.23. Category and market also affect cost.

Do ChatGPT ads convert better than other channels?

Criteo reported in February 2026 that traffic from ChatGPT converted about 1.5x better than other channels on average. That figure covers ChatGPT referral traffic broadly, not only paid ads, and results vary by store. Use it as a reason to test, then judge on your own conversion data from the pixel, Conversions API and backend orders.

Are there ChatGPT ads benchmarks by industry?

Not reliable ones yet. The channel opened to self-serve advertisers in May 2026, so public industry-level data is thin. Be cautious of precise niche benchmarks without a named source. A better approach is to set targets from your own average order value, margin and site conversion rate, then compare results against the broad reported averages.
