ChatGPT Ads vs Perplexity Ads: Two Answer Engines, Two Media Buys

ChatGPT and Perplexity both put ads next to AI answers. Here is how the two ad products differ on reach, format, targeting and cost, and when a consumer brand should use each.

ChatGPT ads and Perplexity ads sound like the same idea: someone asks an AI a question, reads an answer, and sees a sponsored result nearby. For a brand used to Google versus Meta, it is tempting to treat them as one "answer engine" line item.

They are not one buy. The products, the people on each app, and the creative constraints differ enough that a campaign that works under a ChatGPT chat card will not paste cleanly into Perplexity, and the reverse is also true. This guide compares chatgpt ads vs perplexity ads on audience, intent, format, targeting, cost and measurement, then gives a practical way to decide where a first test belongs.

Details of both products still change. Treat interface names, minimums and inventory types as "as publicly described in 2026" and confirm in each ads manager before you spend. The comparison below is about how the channels behave, not a promise that every control will look the same next quarter.

Audience: scale versus research skew

ChatGPT is the larger consumer habit. Ads reach logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers only. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free, so you are not buying power users who pay to avoid ads. You are buying people who already ask everyday questions in a chat box. That audience is broad: recipes, shopping, homework help, travel plans, product comparisons. Our guide to who sees ChatGPT ads covers the limits in more detail.

Perplexity's consumer base is smaller. The people who open it often want sources, comparisons and a cleaner research trail than a casual chat. That can be a better fit for considered products (mattresses, electronics, travel, financial research that is allowed to advertise) and a worse fit if you need cheap reach or impulse volume. Do not assume Perplexity users are "more premium" in income. Assume they are more likely to be in a research posture when the ad shows.

Geography matters. ChatGPT ads started in the US and expand by market. Perplexity's ad availability is also market-specific. If you cannot ship or convert in the country where the impression runs, neither channel is useful. Confirm current country lists in each platform rather than copying a 2025 announcement.

Intent: conversation versus cited research

Both channels capture expressed intent. That is the whole point of advertising next to an answer instead of a feed.

The shape of the intent still differs.

On ChatGPT, a typical shopping thread is a back-and-forth. "I have a dog that sheds, a small living room, and a $1,200 budget. What sofa fabric should I look at?" Follow-ups add constraints. A good chat card answers that situation in one headline and one proof line.

On Perplexity, the same person may ask a tighter query and expect a sourced roundup: "best performance fabric sofas 2026" or "hybrid mattress for side sleepers, trial period comparison." The ad has to live next to a page that looks more like a research result. Vague brand slogans fail in both places. Specific product facts fail less often on Perplexity because the surrounding answer is already in comparison mode.

If your product wins on a single vivid use case, ChatGPT's conversational card is a natural home. If your product wins on spec tables, trial windows and "versus" language you can actually substantiate, Perplexity's research frame may match the reading mode better. Either way, claims still have to be true. See ad claims and compliance.

Creative formats

ChatGPT

The standard unit is the chat card:

  • Title, 3 to 50 characters
  • Body, about 100 characters
  • One image
  • A landing URL

Product feed campaigns can show more than one product, but you still do not get a 15-second video or a carousel in the Meta sense. Every word has to earn its place. The ad character counter exists because those limits are real.

Effective ChatGPT cards are specific, proof-forward and quiet on fake urgency. OpenAI restricts superlatives, hardship angles and a long list of health and financial promises.

Perplexity

Perplexity's ad units are built to sit in an answer or research layout: sponsored labels, tight copy, sometimes product-like modules depending on the inventory you buy. You should expect:

  • Less room for story than a Meta primary text
  • More pressure to match the query's nouns (category, use case, constraint)
  • A similar need for a landing page that continues the comparison, not a homepage hero

Do not reuse a TikTok script. Do not paste a 125-character Meta primary text and hope. Rewrite for the unit in front of you. If Perplexity offers a longer description field in your account, still lead with the same fact you would put on a ChatGPT card: the proof, not the vibe.

Targeting

ChatGPT ads use context hints: sentences that describe the conversation, such as "renter with two cats choosing a sofa fabric that hides hair." Memory signals can also affect which ads a person sees across chats. There is no lookalike slider and no interest folder.

Perplexity targeting is closer to search than to Meta. The query (and related research topics) is the main relevance engine. You will not get the same Advantage+ style "trust the algorithm with a customer list" workflow. You also will not get ChatGPT-style hint boxes. If you come from Google Ads, Perplexity will feel less alien than ChatGPT. If you come from Meta, both will feel under-tooled, and that is normal.

Practical takeaway: build a question list once. Use it as ChatGPT hints and as the query themes you expect to bid into on Perplexity. The buyer question finder is a reasonable way to populate that list from your site.

Cost

ChatGPT ads are often bought on CPM or CPC, with OpenAI's recommended starting bids working out to roughly $3 to $5 per click and a US minimum around $25 per campaign per day. CPMs can look high versus Meta. Intent can offset that if conversion rates are higher. Compare on CPA and payback, not on CPM pride. Worked examples live in ChatGPT ads cost and the CAC calculator.

Perplexity's public cost story is thinner. Plan for CPC that can sit in a similar "this is not a cheap feed impression" band, and for more variance because the auction is smaller. A small auction can mean bargain inventory one week and jumpy CPCs the next. Cap the test. Do not scale on three conversions.

A hypothetical that keeps the channels honest:

  • ChatGPT: $4.00 CPC, 3.5 percent conversion rate, CPA about $114
  • Perplexity: $2.50 CPC, 2.0 percent conversion rate, CPA about $125

The cheaper click loses. Flip the conversion rates and the ranking flips. Your category will not match this table. That is the point of a contained test.

Measurement and attribution

Neither platform has Meta's years of pixel folklore.

On ChatGPT, use the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API, plus UTMs on every URL, plus a post-purchase survey option that says ChatGPT (or "an AI assistant"). Platform ROAS will be incomplete. Attribution for AI channels and post-purchase survey attribution are the playbooks.

On Perplexity, do the same three layers: platform tag if offered, UTMs, survey. If the user journey is "Perplexity research, then Amazon or Google, then your site," last-click in your store will under-credit Perplexity. Watch MER (total revenue over total ad spend) when you add either channel so you do not congratulate a report that only stole credit. The MER calculator is the simple version of that.

When to use ChatGPT ads

ChatGPT is the better first AI ad test for most consumer brands when:

  • You already have written product proofs that fit a 50-character headline
  • Buyers ask ChatGPT-style situation questions, not only "best X 2026"
  • You want the larger ad-supported audience
  • You can land people on a specific product or collection URL
  • You want a vendor ecosystem (including services like SecondWin) that already knows the chat card

It is also the more documented path for US self-serve in 2026. That matters when your team is small.

When to use Perplexity ads

Perplexity is worth a parallel or second test when:

  • Your category is comparison-heavy and source-driven (electronics, home, travel, some specialty retail)
  • You already win on Google for those queries and want the next research surface
  • ChatGPT is live and you are looking for another intent channel, not a replacement for Meta
  • You can tolerate thinner reporting and a smaller learning set

Skip it as your only AI ad channel if you need volume next month or if your product is a low-consideration impulse item with no research query behind it.

Using both without double-counting the win

A realistic path:

  1. ChatGPT for situation questions ("sofa fabric with two cats, small room").
  2. Perplexity for comparison queries ("performance fabric sofa trial period").
  3. Your site with message-matched pages and the same proof the ad used.
  4. Meta or email if they leave and come back.

Do not launch both on $25 days and expect a ranking. Fund one test until you have enough purchases to trust, then add the second with its own UTMs. For the broader "leave Meta" context, see diversify beyond Meta. Adjacent comparisons: ChatGPT vs Google Ads and ChatGPT vs TikTok ads.

How SecondWin helps

SecondWin builds and manages ChatGPT ad campaigns for consumer brands. It does not buy Perplexity inventory. For brands testing both answer engines, that still helps: SecondWin reads your site, pulls proven messages from long-running Meta ads in your niche, and writes original chat cards with context hints that map to the same questions you would bid on elsewhere.

Ad spend goes to OpenAI. SecondWin handles creative and campaign operations on your OpenAI account. You can run a free analysis of your site to see the questions and messages it finds. Plans are on the pricing page. SecondWin is independent and not affiliated with OpenAI or Perplexity.

FAQ

Are Perplexity ads a substitute for ChatGPT ads?

No. Both sit next to AI answers, but ChatGPT is a conversational card on a larger Free/Go audience, and Perplexity sits in a more research-and-sources posture with a smaller advertiser and user base. Treat them as related intent channels, not as one interchangeable auction.

Which channel is cheaper?

Per-click prices move with the auction. ChatGPT often looks expensive on CPM. Perplexity can look cheaper per click and still lose on CPA if conversion rates are lower. Compare cost per acquisition and payback, and confirm current bids in each ads manager.

Can I use the same creative on both?

You can reuse the message (promise, proof, offer) and the landing page. You should rewrite copy to each unit's length and labeling rules. ChatGPT's 50/100 character card is a hard constraint. Perplexity's modules are not the same template.

Should a small brand test Perplexity before ChatGPT?

Most small consumer brands should test ChatGPT first because the audience is larger and the self-serve path is more established in 2026. Add Perplexity when ChatGPT is instrumented with UTMs and you have budget left for a second intent channel.

How do I know if either channel is working?

Do not trust platform ROAS alone. Use UTMs, a post-purchase question that names ChatGPT and Perplexity separately, and blended MER. If adding a channel grows revenue without a matching hole somewhere else, it is doing a job. If only the platform dashboard improved, you may be moving credit around.
