How to Advertise on ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Setup Guide for 2026

A practical, ordered checklist for launching your first ChatGPT ads campaign, from fit check and pixel setup to writing chat cards, setting bids and reading early results.

Advertising on ChatGPT is open to almost any US business with a credit card since OpenAI launched self-serve Ads Manager in May 2026. Opening the account takes minutes. Building a campaign that earns its budget takes a bit more planning.

This guide walks through the full process in the order you should do it. Skipping ahead to ad copy before tracking and targeting are sorted is the most common reason first campaigns stall.

Step 0: Confirm ChatGPT ads fit your business

Before you spend anything, check two facts about your audience.

First, ads only appear for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users never see them. If you sell software to teams whose staff use ChatGPT through work accounts, most of your buyers are invisible to you here.

Second, the strongest fits are consumer-facing: ecommerce and DTC brands, consumer apps, courses and coaching, creators and prosumers, and local or consumer services. If your buyers ask an AI assistant things like "what's a good gift for a dad who likes grilling" or "how do I fix dry skin in winter," you are in the right place. For more detail on audience, read who sees ChatGPT ads.

Step 1: Create your OpenAI ad account

Go to OpenAI's Ads Manager and sign in with the account you want to own billing. Use a company email you control long term, not a contractor's personal login.

During setup you will:

  1. Enter your business name and website. Your advertiser name and favicon appear on every ad, so make sure the name matches what customers recognize.
  2. Add a payment method. OpenAI bills ad spend directly.
  3. Confirm your market. Minimum daily budgets and features vary by country.
  4. Invite teammates or partners as users if someone else will help manage campaigns.

Keep the account in your company's name. If an agency or service runs your ads, add them as a user rather than letting them own the account, so you keep your data and history if you change partners.

Step 2: Install tracking before you launch

Do not run a single dollar without conversion tracking. You will need it for reporting and for bidding to improve over time.

OpenAI offers two pieces:

  • The pixel (often called the OAIQ pixel): a browser script that records events like page view, add to cart, sign-up, lead and purchase.
  • The Conversions API: a server-side connection that sends the same events from your backend, which is more resilient to browser restrictions and ad blockers.

Automatic advanced matching rolled out in August 2026, improving how conversions are attributed. Install both, fire a test purchase or lead, and confirm the events show up in Ads Manager before going further.

Also tag your landing URLs with UTM parameters so you can see ChatGPT traffic in your own analytics. The free UTM builder keeps your naming consistent across campaigns.

Step 3: Find the buyer questions you want to answer

This is where ChatGPT advertising differs most from search and social. People do not type keywords. They describe situations and ask for advice. Your ad shows below the answer, so the best ads read like a useful next step for that specific question.

Write down 10 to 20 real questions your buyers ask before purchasing. Sources:

  • Support tickets and pre-sale chat logs
  • Product reviews, especially the "I was looking for something that..." sentences
  • Reddit threads and forum posts in your niche
  • Your sales team or your own memory of what customers ask

Then group them by underlying need. For a hypothetical meal-kit brand, groups might be "fast weeknight dinners," "picky kids," and "eating healthier without meal prep." The buyer question finder can speed this up.

Step 4: Pick the message that answers each question

For each question group, decide what your ad promises, what proof backs it up, and what offer gets the click.

The fastest shortcut is to borrow from messages that already work. Look up your niche in Meta's Ad Library and note which ads have been running for 60 days or more. Advertisers rarely keep paying for ads that do not sell, so long runners point to promises and offers that resonate. Do not copy them. Extract the idea, then write it in your own words with your own proof.

Step 5: Write context hints

Context hints tell ChatGPT which conversations your ad belongs in. They are plain-language descriptions, not keyword lists.

Weak hintStrong hint
meal kitsbusy parent looking for fast weeknight dinners their kids will actually eat
healthy dinneradult trying to eat more vegetables but too tired to cook after work
recipescouple who wants to cook together on weeknights but hates grocery planning

Each strong hint names a person, a situation, a need and some sense of intent. Write three to five hints per ad group. Our context hints guide covers how to test and refine them.

Step 6: Write your chat cards

A chat card has a title of 3 to 50 characters, a body of about 100 characters, an image and a landing URL. That is tight, so every word has to work.

Here is an example for the hypothetical meal-kit brand:

  • Title: Weeknight Dinners Ready in 20 Minutes
  • Body: Pre-portioned ingredients and kid-tested recipes, delivered weekly. Skip or pause anytime.

And one for a hypothetical sleep sack:

  • Title: Cozy Sleep Sacks for Restless Sleepers
  • Body: Breathable sleep sacks sized 6 to 24 months. Free exchanges if the size is off.

Notice what is missing: no "best," no "#1," no ALL CAPS, no countdown timers, no claims you cannot prove. OpenAI's policies ban unverifiable claims, fake urgency and copy that implies the ad knows what the user wrote. Run each draft through the ChatGPT ad policy checker before you upload it.

Write at least three cards per ad group, each with a different angle: speed, ease, price, outcome or trust.

Step 7: Match the landing page

The click should land on a page that continues the exact promise of the card. If the ad says "20-minute dinners," the page headline should say it too, and the first screen should show how it works and what it costs.

Generic homepages lose people. OpenAI also requires that landing pages match the ad, so a mismatch can get an ad rejected as well as waste spend.

Step 8: Set budget and bids

As of mid-2026 your options are:

  • CPC: pay per click. OpenAI's recommended starting bids work out to roughly $3 to $5 per click.
  • CPM: pay per thousand impressions. Third-party reports put CPMs roughly in the $25 to $45 range.
  • oCPC: optimized CPC, in beta for product-feed campaigns since August 2026.

For a first campaign, CPC is the simplest way to control what you pay for. The minimum is about $25 a day per campaign in the US, but a starting range of $50 to $200 a day gets you to useful data faster.

Hypothetical math: at $75 a day and $4 per click, you get about 19 clicks a day, or roughly 130 a week. At a 3% conversion rate, that is about 4 conversions a week. That is enough to spot direction after two weeks, not enough to declare a winner after two days. Plan with the ChatGPT ads budget calculator, and read how much ChatGPT ads cost for more on bids.

Step 9: Launch and leave it alone for a few days

After launch, check delivery within 24 hours to confirm ads are approved and spending. Then resist the urge to change things daily. Early data is noisy.

A sensible first two weeks:

  • Days 1 to 3: Confirm approvals, spend and that conversions are recording.
  • Days 4 to 7: Look at CTR by ad. Pause cards far below the rest.
  • Days 8 to 14: Look at cost per conversion by ad group. Shift budget toward groups that convert, and write new cards for the winning angle.

As a rough reference point, Similarweb reported an average ChatGPT ad CTR around 0.68%, with top brands near 1.57%. Your numbers will vary by niche and offer.

Step 10: Refresh and expand

Once you find a question group and message that converts, expand around it. Write new hints for adjacent situations, test new images, and add more cards on the winning angle. Refresh creative on a schedule so the account does not go stale.

FAQ

How long does it take to set up ChatGPT ads?

Creating an OpenAI ad account and adding payment takes minutes. Installing the pixel and Conversions API can take an hour to a day depending on your platform. The slowest part is usually the strategy: finding buyer questions, writing context hints and drafting compliant chat cards. Plan on a few days for a careful first launch, then two weeks of running before you judge results.

Do I need an agency to advertise on ChatGPT?

No. Ads Manager is self-serve and free to use, so you can run campaigns yourself and pay only for ad spend. Many brands use help because writing good context hints and policy-safe copy is a new skill. Options include doing it yourself, hiring an agency on a retainer, or using a done-for-you service. Whichever you choose, keep the ad account in your own name.

What is the best bid type for a first ChatGPT campaign?

For most first campaigns, CPC is the simplest choice because you only pay when someone clicks, which makes costs easier to control and compare. OpenAI's recommended starting bids work out to roughly $3 to $5 per click as of mid-2026. CPM can make sense for awareness goals, and oCPC is in beta for product-feed campaigns.

Can I use my Facebook ad copy on ChatGPT?

You can reuse the idea, not the copy. Facebook ads are built to stop a scroll, while ChatGPT chat cards answer a question someone just asked, with a 50-character title and about 100 characters of body. Take the promise, proof and offer from your best Meta ads and rewrite them as a direct, compliant answer to a specific buyer question.
